Mae Klang Luang Coffee Village |
Written by Ingrid Tharasook
True coffee lovers will travel to the ends of the earth to get that perfect roast. And that is exactly what our team of intrepid reporters did on a humid midsummer afternoon, scanning the Doi Inthanon mountain ranges from top to bottom: Reach the pinnacle of Thailand’s tallest mountain, at over 2,500 meters above sea level, and you will find your generic Doi Inthanon tourist beverage served from a big, blue (overly-commercialized) booth. But stop almost halfway up the climb – 1,080 kilometers high – at the Mae Klang Luang village and you’ll find the real deal, the genuine fruit of Doi Inthanon soil.

The exquisite needle works by the Hmong hilltribe people in Northern Thailand owe their inspiration to their surrounding nature and the cubical shapes of things in their daily life which are reflected on their elaborate ethnic tribe costumes. Ratana Yingyotmongkonsan, 22, a Hmong fabric designer from Chiang Mai's Doi Pui, has developed the old Hmong fabrics into original and classic bags which are much sought after by Thai and foreign enthusiasts of hill tribe fabrics. An entrance has been creatively shaped into a concrete elephant form while gigantic elephants and sculptures are exhibited in front of the museum built in theThai Lanna style.

Phin Pia, A romantic plucked instrument |
Written by Lin Nina
While a large majority of the Thai youth nowadays seems to be preoccupied with contemporary cults such as Hip Hop, Rock or Pop culture, Withaya Ponwithun, 22, remains fascinated with a classic Northern Thai folk musical instrument called "Phin Pia". Withaya, presently one of Thailand's leading young blood Phin Pia players, remarked that this folk instrument, which almost disappeared several years ago, is truly a romantic plucked string instrument. The Phin Pia, which gives out a soft musical tone, is best played in a quiet place so that its player can create a cozy atmosphere and privately serenade his lover. Occasionally returning to his Lampang home, Withaya is fond of playing the Phin Pia late in the night, as he wanders through the nearby fields under the moonshine and the stars. Without any other interfering noise, Wittaya is able to find his true serenity.
