Adjacent to the Lotus Superstore and the Kamthieng flowers and plants market in Chiang Mai, the JJ Market came into life a few years ago with the anticipation of attracting an upscale niche market. With its well appointed wide avenue, beautifully landscaped gardens and tastefully designed stores, the JJ Market strip is still a quiet and dormant neighbourhood during daylight, but it has recently developed into a vibrant nightlife scene.

The feeling one gets walking into the Sudsanan Pub & Guay Jab Yuan is more of a large private party for close friends at someone’s home, rather than a public establishment or a nightclub. The relaxed and friendly atmosphere felt like a gathering place with an interesting mixture of art, techno and philosophy students from neighbouring universities mixed among writers, musicians, wannabees, NGOs of various callings, and a hippy looking crowd reminiscent of far gone eras. Most clients are repeat customers with new faces showing up through word of mouth.

The Khan Asa Pub and Restaurant is located right on the moat which surrounds the original Chiang Mai town. Sripoom Road which separates it from the canal is lined by towering "flaming" trees". From the exterior, this eatery appears more like someone's private large living room than a public space. Inside, one immediately feels the friendly, relaxed and comfortable atmosphere as Somchai Khan-asa (mostly known as Nong) or his wife Pou, the owners, will personally greet you and offer you a table.

The Drunken Flower Bar and Restaurant gets its name from the original days when it made its debut on Huay Kaew Road as Chiang Mai's first wine tasting club which also sold imported flowers and bulbs from Holland. It has now moved to the very upscale and trendy Soi 1 of Nimmanhemin Road. The very chic Modiva restaurant just opened next door. Nimmanhemin Soi 1 is a dead-end road, and the Drunken Flower is the very last aging two storey wooden building, surrounded by a lush garden. Tables under parasols are scattered around what would have been the driveway, offering a very residential and relaxed atmosphere. The main building houses more sitting arrangements and a very long bar "serving" a DJ with a selection of thousands of CDs and tapes. The live musicians also perform indoors.

Previously known as the Rasta Café for 8 years, the renamed Babylon Bar and Restaurant was reopened on Christmas Day 2005 after a temporary closure for six months. "Boy", the owner, thought of naming it Cannabis but considered it too presumptuous and challenging to the authorities.
