Kao Tok Silk & Cotton

Simple but elegant was my first impression on this silk and cotton clothes shop named "Kao Tok" situated on Tha Pae Road. From bright colours to light and dark tones, the shop displays ladies' silk and cotton clothes designed by a Japanese couturier who has had long years of experience in the garment business in Japan prior to working in Chiang Mai.

Hidden Japan: A Look of Nature

To mark the auspicious occasion of His Majesty The King of Thailand's 80th birthday anniversary in December 2007, and to celebrate the 120th anniversary of Japan-Thailand Diplomatic Relations in 2007, the Japan Foundation, in co-operation with the Siam Society and the Chiang Mai University Art Center, is presenting a photographic exhibition entitled “Hidden Japan”, focusing on a candid look at nature in Japan, on January 10 - 31, 2008, at CMU Art Center. The Opening Ceremony will be held on January 9, 2008, at 6 p.m. The exhibition features a collection of 85 black and white photographs taken throughout Japan by Yahagi Kijuro, a renowned photographer of contemporary Japan.

Another deserving addition to our growing list of Japanese eateries in Chiang Mai would have to be the recently opened “Hatena Sake and Shoku Dining”. An affordable Japanese place to eat in the upscale Nimmanhemin Road vicinity is a real find, so when it was suggested that we pay a visit to the newcomer Hatena, we initially expected to find just another high-class and impersonal establishment.

With several thousands of Japanese expats and long stay visitors already present in Chiang Mai, the city is likely to attract more retired Japanese citizens to live here because of the existing Thai Immigration open door policy for senior Japanese citizens.
