In Lamphun, living next door to an Indian fabric merchant whose appetizing cooked curry aroma wafted through the air days after days started a 5 year-old Thai boy’s fascination with Indian curries. The youngster dreamed of trying the Indian cuisine himself one day but he was too shy to ask for any taste. Pongsak Cherdjareewatananun, the young Lamphun boy, currently the Chairman of the renowned Jaliang Ceramics, recently fulfilled his childhood dream by opening “Hinlay”, a curry house restaurant at his residence in the Wat Kate area. Named after the Burmese curry “Hinlay”, the restaurant serves mainly Indian curries with a few Burmese specialties in a relaxed garden environment.

You just cannot miss the well designed banners advertising the daily specialties on the front sidewalk. Ms Atilaya Kaewreung (better known as Nueng), the owner and manager who also happens to be a trained architect, was able to fuse an eclectic combination of contemporary and traditional design styles to transform a simple store front into a trendy, intimate and inviting restaurant.

Thaiwijit Puengkasemsomboon thoroughly impressed our senior photographer and I with his unpretentious and humble manners towards people he met or talked to, either in person or on the phone. So much that I would rather refer to him as a gentleman artist instead of an abstract expressionist artist as so many others have labelled him.
