A Thai Airways International flight from Kunming to Chiang Mai packed with a large group of Chinese students has become a familiar scene to Thai frequent fliers boarding the same flight. They know these Chinese boys and girls are coming to study Thai in Chiang Mai. The Chinese youths are preparing themselves for future careers in trade and tourism, developing potential links among other ASEAN countries from Thailand and China.

While a large majority of the Thai youth nowadays seems to be preoccupied with contemporary cults such as Hip Hop, Rock or Pop culture, Withaya Ponwithun, 22, remains fascinated with a classic Northern Thai folk musical instrument called "Phin Pia". Withaya, presently one of Thailand's leading young blood Phin Pia players, remarked that this folk instrument, which almost disappeared several years ago, is truly a romantic plucked string instrument. The Phin Pia, which gives out a soft musical tone, is best played in a quiet place so that its player can create a cozy atmosphere and privately serenade his lover. Occasionally returning to his Lampang home, Withaya is fond of playing the Phin Pia late in the night, as he wanders through the nearby fields under the moonshine and the stars. Without any other interfering noise, Wittaya is able to find his true serenity.
